The Place: 782 Washington Avenue
There are two things you should know about me at this very moment. For one, of course I love breakfast food (it’s a staple), and of course the best time to eat it is at 1am in the morning. Second, no, I don’t really like diners much. Why? Well, I believe they have a tendency to overcharge for mediocre food and service. Naturally, when I eat at a diner where this is not the case, I feel that it is worth mentioning. Welcome to Tom’s Restaurant.
Now, before you get your hopes up that I’m going to be making Seinfeld references for the next twenty minutes, this is not the same place as Tom’s Restaurant/Monk’s Restaurant in the Upper West Side. While the outside of that restaurant was featured in every Seinfeld episode, and while they have a glorious signed poster of Kramer hanging on the wall, the food is really not good, and expensive. (The show isn’t a lie–the inside of the restaurant was filmed in L.A. Everyone calm down.) I digress. It’s not you. It’s me. Giddyup! (Ok, I’m really done now, I swear.)
The Tom’s Restaurant we’re talking about has been around since 1936, so they are doing something right. In fact, they seem to have done a lot right. Check out an article here on the history of this place. There is something important you need to know: this place has been featured everywhere (The NY Post, The Daily News, The New York Times, TimeOut NY, etc., etc.) as one of the best places to eat a CHEAP breakfast. Now we’re talking.
Cinnamon Roll Pancakes ($9.50)
Imagine three cinnamon rolls pressed down onto a grittle with icing poured all over them and a side of syrup. Now, look at the picture right above you. Yes, that is exactly what you were imagining. I dare you to try to eat all of this. And I dare you not to make strange noises while you try.
2 Fresh Eggs ($6.50, $10.50 with bacon)
I like that they feel the need to establish that the eggs are fresh on the menu. Yes, fresh eggs are important. And so is bacon, so stop looking at me like that–I really wanted bacon that day. I am a sucker for the classic breakfast combo, and that’s exactly what this is. They do a great job with it here.
Everyone doesn’t love their neighborhood diner, but the neighbors around here sure should. Make sure next time you are in Prospect Heights to make a breakfast run, and then make sure you can schedule in a nap later on in the day.
Put a fork in it.
